Authorised Agent- what he can do and how to authorise
An authorised agent is someone you've officially appointed to act on your behalf when dealing with HMRC. This is usually a professional accountant or tax adviser who meets HMRC’s standards and has permission to manage specific tax matters for a client.
What an Authorised Agent Can Do
Once authorised, an agent can:
-
File tax returns (e.g. Self Assessment, VAT, Corporation Tax)
-
View and manage your tax account
-
Communicate directly with HMRC
-
Handle CIS deductions and submissions
-
Assist with investigations or compliance checks
Why Authorisation Matters
HMRC won’t discuss a taxpayer’s affairs with anyone unless they’ve been formally authorised. Authorisation ensures:
-
Secure access to tax records
-
Legal permission to act on the client’s behalf
-
Clear accountability and audit trail
