About You

What is a UTR Number?

A Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) is a 10-digit number issued by HMRC to identify individuals, self-employed workers, and businesses for tax purposes. Think of it as your personal tax fingerprint—it’s needed every time you file a Self Assessment, make tax payments, or get in touch with HMRC about your income.

Whether you’re wondering how to get a UTR number in the UK or looking for guidance on applying for a UTR with HMRC, understanding this number is the first step in managing your taxes smoothly.

Who Needs a UTR Number

You will need a UTR number if you receive income from:

  • Working as a self-employed person or sole trader (UTR for self-employed)

  • Subcontracting under CIS (UTR for CIS registration)

  • Renting out property (UTR for landlords)

  • Running a limited company as a director (UTR for limited company)

  • Selling assets such as shares, crypto, or property (UTR for capital gains)

  • Receiving income not taxed at source, such as freelance work, dividends, or foreign income

In short, if you’re earning money outside of standard PAYE employment, having a UTR is essential

How to Apply for a UTR Number

Applying for a UTR with HMRC doesn’t have to be complicated. At Accounted4Tax Ltd, we make it simple, secure, and fast. We handle everything for you, so you can focus on your work or business.

Here’s what you get when you apply with us:

  • A straightforward UTR application online

  • Support from a UK-based licensed accountant

  • A dedicated account manager to guide you through the process

  • A free consultation to discuss your personal tax circumstances

  • CIS registration included for subcontractors

Whether it’s a first-time UTR application or registering a UTR for a limited company, we make sure the process is smooth and stress-free.

After You Receive Your UTR Number

You can start working at any time while waiting for the UTR number. If you requested CIS registration as well, then you will be taxed at 30% for now, but do not worry, this will drop to 20% once the UTR number is issued, and any overpaid tax will be recovered through the self assessment tax return

Throughout the year, it helps to stay organized for your self-assessment:

  • Issue invoices and get paid

  • Keep accurate records of expenses (tax records for self-employed)

  • Check allowances and reliefs that apply to your situation

  • Use all this information to submit your tax return online efficiently

Having a UTR makes it easier to manage your taxes, whether you’re self-employed, a contractor under CIS, a landlord, or running a limited company. With the right guidance, applying for and using your UTR becomes straightforward.
