Government Gateway Account/ HMRC Account/ Personal Tax Account

WARNING- DO NOT SHARE YOUR SIGN IN DETAILS AND/OR PASSWORD WITH ANYONE (not even with your accountant, or HMRC)

A Government Gateway account is your secure digital key to accessing a wide range of UK government services online—especially those provided by HMRC. It’s essential for anyone managing their own tax affairs, whether you're self-employed, a landlord, or running a limited company.

It's also known as HMRC Online Account or Personal Tax Account.

What Is It?

  • A centralised login system used to access HMRC services like Self Assessment, VAT, PAYE, Corporation Tax, and CIS.

  • You receive a 12-digit user ID and password when you register.

  • It’s separate from your UTR (Unique Taxpayer Reference), but both are needed for tax-related tasks.

What You Can Do With It

  • File your Self Assessment tax return

  • View your tax account and payment history

  • Submit VAT returns and manage MTD compliance

  • Access CIS statements and deductions

  • Register for Corporation Tax or PAYE as an employer

  • Claim tax refunds or update personal details
